Koh Ker (UNESCO): An Ancient Kingdom to Explore

Start your day with a visit to Koh Ker, the ancient capital of the Khmer kingdom in the 10th century. This archaeological site, less frequented than the famous temples of Angkor, offers you an authentic and intimate experience. Admire the magnificent temples, including the famous Prasat Thom, a majestic pyramid that rises 30 meters high. Stroll among the jungle-shrouded ruins and marvel at the wild beauty of this place steeped in history.

Capital of the Khmer Empire: Koh Ker was founded by King Jayavarman IV, who moved the capital of the Khmer Empire from Angkor to Koh Ker around 928. This change of capital was motivated by political and religious reasons, including escaping conflict and establishing a new center of power.

Architecture and Temples: Koh Ker is famous for its many temples, the most iconic of which is the Prasat Thom Temple, a five-tiered pyramid. This temple is dedicated to Shiva and is built of sandstone. The structure is unique and represents an important step in the evolution of Khmer architecture. Other notable temples include Prasat Krahom and Prasat Bak.

Reign of Jayavarman IV: During the reign of Jayavarman IV, Koh Ker underwent significant architectural and artistic development. The king also commissioned the construction of many other temples and monuments, strengthening the religious and cultural character of the region.

Abandonment and Oblivion: After the death of Jayavarman IV, the capital was moved back to Angkor, and Koh Ker was gradually abandoned. The site remained relatively unknown for centuries, covered by jungle and forgotten by the outside world.

Beng Mealea: Nature Reclaims Its Own

Next, head to Beng Mealea, a mysterious and captivating temple, often described as the “lost temple.” Here, nature has reclaimed its own land, with trees and roots intertwining with the ancient stones. Explore this fascinating site at your own pace, letting your curiosity guide you. The spectacular landscapes and peaceful atmosphere of Beng Mealea make it an ideal place for photography enthusiasts and history buffs.
