Your adventure begins with a departure from Siem Reap, where you’ll travel for approximately two hours to reach the temple of Koh Ker, a fascinating archaeological site. The former capital of the Khmer Empire in the 10th century, Koh Ker is home to a collection of temples, the most famous of which is Prasat Thom, a five-tiered pyramid offering panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. This site, less crowded than other temples of Angkor, will allow you to immerse yourself in the history and spirituality of the Khmer civilization.
After a two-hour visit, you’ll continue your journey through two provinces to eastern Cambodia, until you reach Stung Treng. This town, located at the confluence of the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers, is known for its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Stung Treng also boasts a rich history, having been an important trading center during the Khmer era, and today it’s the perfect starting point for exploring the surrounding natural wonders.
After checking in to your hotel, you’ll set off on a boat trip to explore the Mekong’s submerged forest. This unique forest is a precious ecosystem, home to incredible biodiversity. You’ll also have the option to rent kayaks locally for a more immersive experience in this enchanting landscape.
The next day, you’ll discover the magnificent multi-tiered Preah Nimith Waterfalls. These waterfalls, often surrounded by lush vegetation, are a place of relaxation and natural beauty. The crystal-clear waters and rock formations create an ideal setting for swimming or simply relaxing to the gentle sound of the water.
After this visit, you’ll continue your journey towards Siem Reap. On the way, you’ll stop at the Beng Mealea Temple, another hidden gem of Cambodia. Built in the 11th century, this temple is famous for its impressive architecture and the lush vegetation that surrounds it, creating a cinematic atmosphere. You’ll have an hour to explore this fascinating site, where nature and history blend harmoniously.
Finally, you’ll have about an hour’s drive back to Siem Reap, your head full of unforgettable memories of this adventure in the heart of the Mekong.
